Rheenendal

Rheenendal came to South Africa's attention after a devastating bus crash in which 14 children and 1 adult drowned on 24 August 2011.

Every time I cross the little bridge just before Totties Farm Kitchen I cannot help but to turn off my radio in a silent tribute to the children who lost their lives.  Gone but never forgotten..xx

I decided to surprise my daughter by collecting her from school with Jess in the car and only told her we are going out to lunch.  She was surprised when we travelled towards Knysna.  Just before Belvidere is a signpost to the left that reads "Rheenendal".  There are many hidden gems, but I've decided on Totties Farm Kitchen and Spookasem.

Totties Farm Kitchen is simply gorgeous:  Friendly people, stunning dĂ©cor and value-for-money,  delicious food.

Love the presentation!

The plan was to just eat at Totties and then move on to Spookasem for a cup of tea.
Sigh..for the second time now Spookasem was closed upon our arrival.  There was a small hand scribbled note reading:  "New times..Tuesday to Sundays, 10.30am to 3pm".  Ok..try running a successful business with those hours, the owners obviously do not need the money.  More potential customers parked outside and we all had to turn around.

On to plan B.

We decided to take the dirt road via the Phantom Pass towards Belvidere and have drinks there.

Belvidere Manor is beautiful, white buildings and trees full of mushrooms.  The Bell Tavern reminds me of the pubs in Ireland with the low ceiling entrance.  The staff are quirky and funny and quick to serve.  I glanced at the menu and decided we have to come back for lunch.

Look at the mushroom on the tree trunk!
A lovely afternoon and this all less than an hour's drive from George!
